Locking Up Routers

I have had issues with many of the sub 100$ routers and wifi routers out there... Most are programming issues. Bug fixes that never come. etc... Some are out of the manufactures hands, You can't expect a company to support something forever. I think that when a devices falls out of support it should have its firmware open sourced. Just what I think there...

Anyways here are the issues with two WiFi Routers that I have.

DI-524 (A Sub $50 Router)
Setup was very easy.
Seemed to work great.

Problem:
It would lock up or just keep resetting.
WiFi would work for about 1/2 a sec then it would lose connection and reset.

So baffled since it is a new device I checked the usual things.
1. is it plugged in.
2. is there another wifi router on the same channel
3. is the WAN connected

All seemed to be good so I checked if there was a firmware update..
There was.. so I was like cool.. that must be whats wrong. So I did the update
followed the PDF on how to do it properly... set it up and boom.. did the exact same thing.

(WTF!)
So I decided to crack the case and check it out.
Looked at everything and I noticed it had ARM processor. No Heatsink. I started to think.. every time I did something that would cause traffic it would reset. So I decided to keep the case off and see if it resets. 2hrs and no reset. So I grabbed my junk heat sink from a p120 and hacked it into small pieces and glued them with heat sink epoxy. The device works flawlessly.

I have had the exact problem with a Linksys WRK54G router. The same Fix of putting heat sinks on the chips.

Obviously if you do this Fix you need to make sure you don't short any of the traces (wires on the board) or any of the chips connection points. I have successfully done this with plain old super glue instead of epoxy but I am unsure of its lasting ability. You are on your own. Warranty will surely be voided if you do anything to a device. I do not suggest you do this fix unless you are competent with your abilities.
